1910. Ship's Chronometer by Henry Hughes & Son, London

THE HUGHES :
1712 Thomas Hughes (senior) became a member of the Honourable Company of Clockmakers at the age of 26. 1742 Thomas Hughes (senior) was elected as Master of the Honourable Company of Clockmakers. 1762 Thomas Hughes (junior) was elected as Master of the Honourable Company of Clockmakers. Business at 25 New Broad Street London. 1781 William Hughes (believed to be the son of Thomas jnr) elected freeman of Company of Clockmakers. Sold a cabin clock to Captain Cook. 1791 A Hughes chronometer was sold to Captain Bligh of the Bounty. 1794 Joseph Hughes, (believed to be the son of William) was born and became a well-known maker of quadrants and compasses, he lived and worked at 16 Queens Street, Ratcliffe. 1816 Henry Hughes, grandfather of Arther Hughes, was born (son of Joseph). 1838 Henry Hughes set up in Business, first at 120 Fenchurch Street, then at 59 Fenchurch Street, the famous address which endured until the blitz of 1941. 1879 Henry died, succeeded by his son Alexander as chairman. 1903 Henry Hughes & Son became a limited liability company. Controlling interest in Henry Hughes & Son Ltd purchased by S. Smith & Sons Ltd. Collaboration initiated in development of marine and aircraft instruments. Major expansion of Hainault factory. 1941 Fenchurch Street premises destroyed in blitz.

Ca. 1910 two-day box chronometer by 1910's H.Hughes & Son Ltd, 59 Fenchurch St, London. This rare and highly collectable ships chronometer is all complete and in perfect working order. Mahogany case in very good condition; ivory plaque also reads "H.Hughes & Son Ltd 1449 London". Brass handles, cover latch and original ratcheted winding key. Beautiful silvered dial and gold-plated hands in mint condition. Set in gimbals, this movement looks like it just has left the factory! See enclosed picture! Up and down indicator, fuseé (chain-driven pulley) drive, damascened, 24-karat gold-plated movement with diamond endcap jewels on escape wheel and balance wheel, spring detent escapement, compensation balance with helical spring.
