The Datejust wasn't the first automatic watch, or the first water-proof watch, or the first chronometer or even a watch with a date function. However, the Datejust was first wrist watch to feature all those four functions combined. Over the years, Rolex sold millions of Datejust watches and the gold and steel combination was probably the most recognizable status symbol of 1970-1980s. Until recently the watch had seen only minor changes: an upgrade to a better, more modern movement the Cal 3035, and the replacement of Plexi glass with flat sapphire crystal. This particular piece was somehow transitional - it featured the new mechanism yet retained the plexi glass. Finding a 'good and honest' tu-tone Datejust was never an easy task. While there are hundreds of Datejusts available online at any given time, only a select few are in very good condition and feature original Rolex bracelets. What you really want is a bracelet in very fine condition, showing no wear, and a freshly overhauled piece which will keep decent time for many years to come. This is exactly what we have for you today. |

Originally quartz based Rolexes issued before the 70's used the appropriated Beta 21 movement. Finding it unreliable and difficult to service, Rolex began to develop their own proprietary movement. After 5 years of research and development, Rolex issued one of the most "over-engineered" quartz movements ever to be made, the 5053. Quartz movements are affected greatly by shifts in temperature, which alter the oscillating frequency of the crystal. Rolex overcame this problem by introducing a thermistor to the circuit which detected the ambient temperature of the movement and its case, and altered the voltage supplied to the crystal. Furthermore, a series of sensors accommodated for gradual shifts in frequency response of the crystal over time, which greatly increased accuracy. Think of this movement as today's electric cars, the Tesla of watches. |
