A chronograph with telemeter function allows the wearer to roughly measure the distance to a particular event that can be both heard and seen (ie. thunder, a lightning bolt or even a torpedo strike if you′re in a military zone). It does this using the speed of sound (340 metres per second). It′s actually pretty fascinating. The wearer starts the chronograph at the very instant that an event is seen and then stops timing at the very instant the event is heard. The position on the scale then shows the distance separating you from the event. So if a storm were breaking near you you could use your telemeter to measure the time that has elapsed between a lightning flash and a thunder clap on the chronograph scale. If you′re in the military you can imagine the many uses you could have for this kind of data.
